Getting married ‘legally’ is a little more involved than you may originally think.

Unfortunately, most people believe that once the celebrant, officiant or priest says the words “I now pronounce you man and wife” or, thankfully, because the Australian government is now up with the times “husband and husband” or “wife and wife”, that you are legally married… however, this is not the case.

Below you will find answers to all your marriage certificate questions.

Must I do anything prior to our wedding?

Yes, a lodgement to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages must be registered by your celebrant, officiant or priest. Your celebrant will ask you for you and your partners’ details such as name, address, passport, birth certificate etc. They will then lodge the Intent to Marry form to the Queensland Government no later than one month prior to your wedding date.

Isn’t the document we sign at our ceremony our marriage certificate?

No, the document you and your partner sign at your wedding ceremony is only a ceremonial marriage certificate given to you by your registered celebrant. This document cannot be used as proof of your marriage.

How do I apply?

After your wedding, your celebrant will start the process of lodging your marriage legally. After they have sent the appropriate paperwork they will send you through a link via email for you to complete the application. This can all be completed online. You will need to obtain copies of proof of ID documents certified by a Justice of the Peace or another authorised person for yourself and your partner.

Are there any costs involved?

Yes, a standard marriage certificate including postage will cost roughly $50.00.

When will I receive my marriage certificate?

Should your application be correct with all the appropriate paperwork attached, the process timeframe should be 5 business days for non-urgent certificate applications or 2 business days for express certificate applications (extra costs involved).
